Healthy Habits For A Hectic Lifestyle

How to manage your time effectively and maintain a happy and healthy lifestyle

I often hear how busy schedules and hectic lifestyles get in the way of individuals achieving their nutrition and fitness goals. In fact, a recent study revealed that 55% of people view a ‘lack of time’ as the main barrier which prevents them from eating a healthier diet.

I can empathise; running a business whilst caring for young children can be extremely time-consuming. After much practice and some trial and error, I have discovered that with a bit of organisation anyone can stay on track and reap the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

Meal Planning

By failing to prepare you are often preparing to fail. I know the feeling of getting home late and preparing a nutritious meal from scratch may be the last thing on your mind. But trust me, a little organisation can go a long way when it comes to maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

A recent study actually discovered that individuals who planned meals in advance were more likely to have a healthier diet, helping to prevent weight gain and obesity.

The first thing to do is to list your favourite, well-balanced dinner recipes and ensure you buy all the necessary ingredients at the start of the week. If you are struggling for meal inspiration, take to the Internet. There are numerous websites offering a wide range of healthy meal ideas.

HIIT Workouts

With work and family commitments, many of us don’t have time for long gym sessions. However, exercise should be a top priority as it can reduce your risk of major illnesses such as cancer and type 2 diabetes by up to 50% (NHS).

Unfortunately, desk jobs can often limit movement for extended periods of time, which can often lead to back pain, muscle discomfort and serious issues like heart disease and obesity!

I’ve become a huge fan of HIIT workouts as they provide a quick, effective and convenient way to incorporate physical activity into my daily routine. HIIT stands for high-intensity interval training and can be completed with little equipment from home, so there is no need for an expensive gym membership!

Meal Prepping

Early morning meetings and working longer hours can lead to grabbing food on the go or missing meals altogether. Unfortunately, many of these convenience snacks aren’t the most nutritious, whilst missing meals can often lead to poor food choices later that day.

I find that preparing meals in advance is one of the best ways to stay on track and maintain a healthy lifestyle during busy periods. Overnight oats are a great way to ensure you have a nutritious and filling breakfast. Make them the evening before and they are ready to eat the next morning.

Stocking up the fridge with healthy and convenient snacks is also a great idea, try preparing vegetables or fruit to have with humous or yoghurt for when you’re hit with those unexpected hunger pangs.

Wall Planners

When life has you juggling a million and one things at once, scheduling in time to meal prep and exercise becomes bottom of your priority list.

Having a wall planner or diary is an amazing way to visualise your daily routine so you can prioritise your time. After a while, you’ll be able to create a flexible schedule which allows you to incorporate a range of healthy habits.

Don’t forget that life can still get in the way of things, even when you’ve implemented all the necessary organisation tips. It’s important to remember that things don’t always go according to plan...and that’s okay! You can always get right back on track the following day or week if things get a little hectic.
