Maintain That Fresh Salon Feeling In Between Appointments!

Whether your hair’s coloured, prone to split ends or has extensions, discover how you can maintain its peak condition in between salon appointments!

How to Maintain Healthy Hair in Between Salon Appointments

As a salon owner, you can imagine how delighted I was when the government announced we were allowed to reopen.

It is so good to have the team back together and we are doing everything we can to ensure all of our clients are safe. We have also refurbished the salon during lockdown, and it looks beautiful, even if I have to say so myself!

As you are probably aware, hairdressers and hair salons are getting booked up fast! Plus, with salons having to limit capacity to maintain social distancing, you might be waiting slightly longer for your next appointment.

Even before lockdown, I would often get asked by my clients, “how can I keep my hair in peak condition in between appointments?”

Which is why I have collated some expert insights to help you ensure your hair is feeling and looking salon fresh all year round!

For Coloured Hair

I know it might be tempting, but please refrain from using at-home hair colours! Unfortunately, I have had to help many clients recover from scalp burns, reactions, and hair loss as a result of DIY hair colouring packs. Trust me, the risk just is not worth it.

To maintain your hair’s colour after appointment try washing your hair less frequently and use sulphate free shampoos and conditioners.

When washing, shampoo with warm water and rinse with cold water after conditioning. The warm water will allow the shampoo and conditioner to penetrate and cleanse whilst the cold water will help seal in the moisture from the conditioner, preventing your colour from fading too quickly.

If your roots are beginning to come through then you can always use a colour coverage spray to help disguise them!

For Hair Extensions

For bedtime, I always recommend tying your hair back in a loose ponytail or plait using a soft scrunchie. This helps to prevent knots and that ‘bed head’ look in the mornings.

Refrain from using products such as hairspray, dry shampoo, and mousse as this will dry out your hair extensions, making them harder to manage.

Try to only wash your hair twice a week and when you do, do not do it with your hair tipped over the bath as this can cause tangling.

It is not recommended to colour, tint or perm the extension hair. These types of products contain elements that can damage hair extensions.

For Damaged Hair Prone To Split Ends

Keep your hair looking and feeling silky soft by not using heated tools! Your hair contains keratin proteins and hydrogen bonds so when you use heated styling tools, such as curling irons, flat irons, tongs, or blow dryers, they strip your hair of its natural oils and proteins.

If there is no way you can part with your hair straighteners or curlers, then try keeping the temperature as low as possible and applying the heat to small sections of the hair to limit the damage.

When you start to notice split ends forming, do not cut them yourself! Instead, try making and applying a hair mask, leave it on for 15-30 minutes, rinse with warm water and leave to air dry. This will help reduce the appearance of the split ends and leave you with happier and healthier hair!

Do not forget, to keep your hair in peak condition you should aim to have it cut every 6-8 weeks depending on your hairstyle!
