Telogen Effluvium
What is Telogen Effluvium hair loss?
Telogen effluvium is a condition of temporary hair loss that usually happens after stress, a shock, or a traumatic event or even an illness such as COVID-19. The condition typically is not permanent but can often cause hair loss all over the head but in no real shedding pattern. In most cases, it won't cause you to lose all their hair, but it may become noticeably thin. Telogen effluvium is considered by dermatologists the second most common type of hair loss.
When you experience stress, a traumatic event, or are recovering from an illness such as Flu or Covid, our bodies stress levels rise. Stress triggers a hormone in your body called cortisol, which is linked to the function of hair follicles. High levels of stress can cause this hormone to put your hair growth cycle into a resting phase which is why hair weakens and begins to shed. Which is why so many people are currently experiencing signs of chronic telogen effluvium or hair loss after covid following the recent pandemic.
While Telogen Effluvium is temporary, steps need to be taken to reduce the stress in your life and maintain a healthy nutrient-dense diet to improve the condition of your scalp and eliminate hair shedding. For more information read our blog on how stress can impact the body,
Symptoms and Causes of Telogen Effluvium
Hair loss and hair thinning can look different from person to person, however the main way to diagnose Telogen Effluvium is an increase in the amount of hair a person sheds every day. On average, we lose around 50-100 hairs a day and you may not even notice this happening. However, if you’re experiencing signs of telogen effluvium, you may start to notice that more hair than usual is falling out in the shower or when as you brush your hair.
Our lifestyle can play a big role in causing sudden disturbances to the hair cycle, these may be
Severe stress - Prolonged periods of stress can result in Telogen Effluvium.
Poor diet - A processed food heavy diet can lead to nutritional deficiencies which will impact overall hair health.
Sudden weight loss - Weight loss or chronic calorie restriction can cause the scalp hair to shed due to a lack of nutrients.
Underlying scalp disorder or health condition - These can include autoimmune disease, conditions that affect the thyroid gland, and alopecia areata. If you think you have an autoimmune condition, speak to your GP.
