How Supporting Organic Farming Benefits You and The Planet

Discover why organic farming is important for your health and the planet. Plus, learn how Simone Thomas Wellness supports organic farming.

We often see the word ‘organic’ on the foods we buy, the clothes we wear and even our beauty products. The word organic has many positive connotations, but what does it mean? And what makes a food ‘organic’?

The Soil Association defines organic as:

“Food production that aims to produce sufficient quantities of high-quality food using methods that deliver a breadth of benefits across our entire food system, from people to planet, plant health to animal welfare”.

So, what differentiates organic food from non-organic food?

According to Grist a food can only be certified as organic if the farmers don’t use the following:

  • Synthetics (human-made substances)
  • GMO’s
  • Sewage for fertilizer
  • Radiation

The farmers must also:

  • Use natural fertilizers
  • Rotate produce plots
  • Only use non-toxic pesticides

These rules only apply to foods labelled specifically as ‘organic’, whereas non-organic foods are farmed and produced using methods which could be considered unethical. Learn more about the fundamentals of organic produce.

As a mother, I always buy organic foods where I can as research shows that consuming primarily organic foods can be beneficial for our bodies and the environment. I have also recently launched Nutrihome, to bring you monthly recipes that are organic when possible, clean living with a little bit of indulgence to help you with ideas for your lunch box, breakfast, dinner and snacks. This supports our philosophy at Simone Thomas Wellness that ‘In order for things to look good on the outside, they have got to be great within.’ Good health and wellbeing start at the kitchen table, using the best quality ingredients.

In Episode 7 of my podcast LivingLifeWell I speak with Barbara Cox, who has embarked on a decades-long journey to master the art of nutrition. Have a listen as she shares her wealth of knowledge with us.

Just in case you need more convincing on the benefits of organic food, here are a few scientific facts to prove just how good it is for us...

More Antioxidants:  A six-year study in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, found that organic onions had approximately 20% higher antioxidant content than conventionally grown onions.

More Healthy Fats: According to a 2016 study in the British Journal of Nutrition, organic meat and milk have around 50% more omega-3 fatty acids (a type of unsaturated healthy fat, than conventionally produced products). Organic milk tested in the study also had less saturated fat than non-organic.

Combats Climate Change: Rodale Institute Farming Systems Trial has been conducting research since 1981 and has demonstrated how a healthy organic agriculture system can actually reduce carbon dioxide. The study has also proven that: If 10,000 medium sized farms in the U.S. converted to organic production, they would store so much carbon in the soil that it would be equivalent to taking 1,174,400 cars off the road.
